Fried Dough

Because getting a little bit of sugar and grease on your fingers is what eating is all about!

Fluffy, soft, a bit crispy and only a little greasy.  Nothing beats treating yourself to fried dough and all of the sugary goodness that goes along with it.  Sprinkled with a splash of powdered sugar, or cinnamon if you roll that way, fried dough has been my go-to treat whenever I attend any sporting event, fair and now whenever a Friday passes me by.

Do you ever eat so much that dessert never seems like a good idea because of how full you are?  Well, unfortunately this happens to me more often than I like.  To get around this I sometimes break the rule of eat not eating dessert before dinner.  What can I say; sometimes I like to indulge in a lot of sweets!

Often times before going to a carnival or fair my family would go out to dinner, but being my usual self and forgetting to plan ahead I eat my whole dinner and do not leave any room for dessert.  Needless to say, by the time I find a fried dough stand I cannot think of eating another bite of food, even if it is the glorious dessert of my childhood (am I allowed to childhood memories if I am only 21?).

Growing up I had believed cooking to be  something rather difficult to do, but now I am finding out that making food is rather a straightforward thing to do.  Sure you get the occasional dish that goes awry, but then you get ones that turn out perfectly the first time.  This is one of those recipes.

Desserts seemed like the Mt. Everest of challenges when it came to making something edible, but I now see it like more of a science than anything else.  So, I decided to try my luck at making fried dough and now I am regretting it…not because it came out poorly but because now I do not see myself not making this every weekend!  Nothing keeps me motivated to keep up my exercising like knowing there are a bunch of delicious food to be had~

As a young child I never liked chocolate, but over the years it grew on me more and more to the point where I now believe everything tastes better with chocolate.  With this mentality I decided to see if chocolate fried dough could be a dessert worth eating.  I found that the cocoa made the dough a bit bitter, but nothing a bit sugar cannot fix.  So the next time you are in the mood for making fried dough be sure to throw a couple of chocolate ones into the mix!

Country Fair Fried Dough

Yields: 8

Ingredients

2 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

3/4 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons white sugar

2 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

3/4 cup lukewarm water

Directions

1) Mix the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a medium bowl.

2) Work in the cold butter, using a pastry blender, your fingers, or a mixer.

3) Stir in the warm water to make a soft dough. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.

4) Divide the dough into eight pieces. Working with one piece at a time, roll into a thin 5" round, about 3/8" thick.

5) Heat about 3/8" vegetable oil to 375°F in an electric frying pan, or in a pan over a burner. If you're using a 10" diameter pan, this is 2 cups of vegetable oil. If you're not using an electric frying pan, use a candy thermometer to take the temperature of the oil; or guesstimate it by seeing if the first piece of dough fries nicely in the time specified.

6) Pick up one dough disk, and carefully lower it into the pan. Let it cook for 30-45 seconds (it'll puff up on top and become light brown on the bottom), then flip it over and cook until light brown on the other side, about 30-45 seconds again. You don't want to cook these too dark; they'll become overly crisp.

7) Remove from the oil and set on a paper towel-lined baking sheet. Place in a 200°F oven to keep warm while you make the remaining fried doughs.

8) Serve warm, with maple syrup or cider syrup; confectioners' sugar, or cinnamon sugar; or the topping of your choice.
