Fried Green Beans

Dubbed the “healthy’’ version of a french fry, these crispy, hot, fried green beans add enough of a kick to make you think: I gotta have another!

To fry or not to fry.  This is the question that has haunted me for many a day…not really though.  As of late it has been all about frying.  A vegetable is a vegetable no matter how you have it right?  So why not fry green beans?  After all, who does not like a green bean that has the crunch of a french fry, the subtle hint of something healthy and the heat of many spices?

On the surface a fried green bean seems a little bland.  After all, you have your bean, some coating and oil.  Such a statement is like saying all pasta dishes are the same because you have some pasta and some sauce; it’s the type and quality of the sauce that makes the difference is it not?  The same thing applies for fried green beans.  The excitement of taking each bite is the anticipated heat and crunch that will follow.

I like my foods hot, spicy and full of flavor.  Growing up in a Puerto Rican household made me realize everything should be full of flavor, after all we make beans taste so good they should be a dish in of itself!  So, naturally the perfect complement to fried green beans that I have found is horse radish.  While the coating on each green beans provides some heat, horse radish is the perfect sauce to add an extra kick.  If want something a bit cooler try some ranch or blue cheese.

If I decide to order an appetizer when I go out to dinner I like to order fried pickle chips, of or fried green beans.  Actually anything fried will usually make the cut.  However, frying has always seemed daunting to me because I do not have a frylater.  Luckily for me, I learned that some oil and heat will do the trick and ever since my new found discovery frying has never been easier; so please, do not let frying discourage you from giving it a try.  I bet the moment you try it once, you will be trying to fry everything…like ice cream- I will have to try that really soon!

Let me know what you think of this in the comments below!

Directions:

1. Put oil in pan and set over medium-low heat.

1. Take green beans out of can and place on plate.  Pat dry.

2. Individually place in flour, then dip in egg, then coat with bread crumbs.  Set aside on a plate.

4. Ensure oil is to temperature.  When at temperature place green beans in oil; be sure that the green beans do not clump together in the pan.

I made fried green beans twice and I have learned something very important:

1. Do not use Panko Crumbs.  Instead use your typical flour, egg yolk and bread crumb mixture; I found that the Panko Crumbs do not nearly stick as much.

2. Make sure the green beans have enough space from each other while frying otherwise they will clump together (as indicated in the first three picture as compared to the last two).

3. Horse Radish does indeed add another dimension to the dish!  So, be sure to add some type of dip.
